Volunteers

The Big Event 2020 is canceled.

The Big Event at VCU is an initiative that strives to uphold the ideals of unity and service. This one-day event is not based on socioeconomic need, but rather, it is a way for the student body to express our gratitude to the community that supports VCU. It is important to remember The Big Event is not about the number of jobs completed or the number of students who participate each year. Instead, it is the interaction between students and residents, and the unity that results throughout the community that makes The Big Event so unique.

For liability reasons, volunteers will not be able to use any power tools or ladders taller than 6 feet.

The Big Event General Schedule

8 – 9 a.m.
Volunteer registration begins at Commons Plaza at University Student Commons and participants begin to arrive! Grab a light breakfast and your volunteer shirt before meeting your volunteer group.

9 – 9:30 a.m.
Kickoff activities begin. Get to know your group and learn more about your project for the day and be prepared to get rowdy with The Big Event planning committee and friends. After the kickoff, your group will pick up any needed tools and travel together to your project site.

9:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
VCU volunteers serve residents across RVA! At the completion of your project, head back to Commons Plaza at University Student Commons with your group to return tools and celebrate with us at Activities Programming Board's spring festival, Havoc on the Block.

1:30 – 3 p.m.
Celebrate your hard work with food trucks, music and entertainment at Havoc on the Block. As thanks for volunteering, all volunteers will receive food truck vouchers and you’ll have exclusive early access to the food trucks from 1:30 – 2 p.m. before the festival officially begins at 2 p.m.
